Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15th and we want YOU to be a part of the celebration at Chavez!  Each year, we invite members of the Latino community to speak to our students about college and careers in hopes our students will be inspired to follow in YOUR footsteps!

You've either indicated interest in participating this year, or participated in this event last school year, so we wanted to update you about this year's events:

  • Volunteers will speak on a panel or in a small group with our 11th grade students
  • Volunteers will prepare a bio for students to read prior to the experience, so they can be prepared to ask questions!  The bio should be a brief paragraph that addresses (some or all) the following questions:
    • What is your families heritage?
    • Where did you grow up?
    • What High School did you graduate from?
    • What college did you attend and what was your college major?
    • What organization do you work for? What do you do for the organization that you work for?
    • Why is it important for youth of color to go to college?  How is the college experience different for youth of color?
    • What words of advice do you want to share with students about college and careers?

The opportunities to participate as a volunteer speaker are as follows:

September 17th @ Parkside High School (3701 Hayes St, NE)

  • 10:15am-11:40am
  • 11:30am-12:55pm

September 24th @ Capitol Hill High School (709 12th St, SE)

  • 9:15am-10:40am
  • 10:30am-11:55am
  • 12:30pm-1:50pm

Please RSVP by either emailing Stephanie Remick (stephanie.remick@chavezschools.org) or completing our online volunteer form.
