Saludos a Todos,
Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) is upon us once again! Our past ANSO and Latina Style symposiums have been perfect precursors to Hispanic Heritage Month and this year’s theme. The national theme for 2017 is “Shaping the Bright Future of America.”
Hispanic Heritage Month traces its origins to September 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed a National Hispanic Heritage Week. The week was expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to a month-long celebration honoring the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The strength of our Sea Services and Nation is derived from the diversity of our people, and Hispanic Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Merchant Marines play a critical role in our Sea Services.
Today, Hispanics are participating and leading in every aspect of Sea Service operations, providing unique perspectives and experiences that enhance our culture and improve mission readiness. Our Hispanic Sea Service officers and enlisted leaders represent a long legacy of service by Hispanic Americans and serve as inspiring models for the next generation.
This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme reflects exactly what we are doing at ANSO and Latina Style. Our ANSO motto, “Building Hispanics Today to be Tomorrow’s Sea Service Leaders” completely supports this year’s national theme; we ARE shaping the bright future of America! This is exactly what our program is all about. Our chapters and our regional symposiums support mentoring and career development in order to make our members the best possible candidates for promotion and selection to command! We have much to celebrate—our collective past successes and our culture, but especially our leadership, our values, our heart and our spirit! Remember and honor our heritage and the legacy that has been entrusted to us by our ancestors.
With that in mind, I ask that each of you communicate what it means to be a Hispanic in the greatest Sea Services of the greatest nation in the world and how you are doing your part to shape the bright future of America. Do this not just during this celebratory month, but throughout the year! I ask each of you to continue to give back to our communities, our Sea Services and our Nation in ways that represent our values and reflect our culture! This month offers a special opportunity to show our true value to our communities, our Services and our nation!
¡Adelante con ANSO! ¡Muchísimas gracias!
Saludos afectuosos y muchas bendiciones a todos,
