Veterans Day Message 2024

To all our Veterans,

As the ANSO President, I have the honor to “thank you” and your families for your service and sacrifices in the defense of our Nation.

On this Veterans Day, we celebrate the selfless sacrifice of all Veterans who have served our Nation in uniform. But, we cannot forget those who decided to continue to serve across our nation as military civilians/contractors, volunteers, emergency responders, and in many other fields.

Our Veterans over generations have answered the call and have served with honor, pride, and bravery. Their commitment and dedication reflect a deep sense of duty, essential to the freedoms and values we hold dear. They are the reasons we have the rights and liberties that allow us to dream of a brighter tomorrow. They exemplify our Nation’s finest.

I know that “thank you” will never be enough. But, it should never stop us from saying it.

God Bless you and Semper Fidelis,

Sincerely,
Colonel José L. Montalván
United States Marine Corps

ANSO Marines,

On behalf of the ANSO Board of Directors and the entire membership, I want to wish the United States Marine Corps and every Marine around the globe a Happy 249th Birthday.

Marines have fought in every clime and place with distinction since the founding of the United States regardless of enemy. As the ANSO President, it is my honor and privilege to thank every Marine (Past and Present), their families, and the Marine Civilians for their dedication and continued sacrifice in the defense of our Great Nation.

Since its Birth at Tun Tavern in 1775, the United States Marine Corps’ warrior spirit has become legendary, as I have witnessed and lived it for the last 29 years of my life. As the ‘Tip of the Spear,’ the Marine Corps provides our Nation with a forward-deployed ready force that defends the Constitution and our freedom regardless of the mission assigned. And we have never disappointed!!

Here’s health to you and our Corps!

¡Feliz cumpleaños Marines (Happy Birthday Marines)!

Semper Fidelis,

Sincerely,
Colonel José L. Montalván

April 2023 Message

En Familia, April 2023

April and May celebrate the valuable contributions of military families. April is the month of the military child and May honors military spouses. Those in uniform and retirees know how much military families sacrifice for the nation. Military families make a difference daily by responding to a call they did not volunteer for and supporting their Service Members without fully understanding the complexities of military life.

The military lifestyle requires constant changes, increased adaptability, multiple moves, and high levels of flexibility. Resilience becomes an integral part of the heart of military families. Every set of orders generates uprooting and replanting cycles impacting homes, friends, hobbies, schools, and other activities. Military families find ways to remain fruitful through the challenges of deployments, exercises, long hours, training, and demanding lives. While the journey is full of requirements, military families find a way to move forward.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III recently released a plan to strengthen the well-being of military families and the U.S. military force. This plan described the following six lines of effort:

  • Universal prekindergarten at Department of Defense Education Activity schools. Congress is helping identify funding for this program.
  • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts for Service Members. Dependent Care FSAs will partially alleviate financial pressure affecting Service Members with dependents.
  • New military parental leave benefits. The new parental leave benefits offer 12 weeks of paid, non-chargeable leave to Service Members welcoming a child through birth, adoption, or long-term foster care.
  • Improvements to the Exceptional Family Member Program. The DoD plans to make the EFM program work more effectively for military families.
  • Expanded spouse eligibility for My Career Advancement Account financial assistance. This helpful program will cover E-6 and O-3 military spouses in obtaining a license, certificate, or associate degree.
  • Portability and best practices for professional licenses. The DoD plans to keep advocating for military families holding professional licenses facing challenges in portability after moving while executing orders. The goal is to increase employment opportunities for military spouses after relocation.

ANSO joins in these military families’ observances. Part of our Latino/Hispanic heritage is the value of family. The most recent U.S. Census data highlights how 90% of Latino/Hispanic parents share meals frequently with their children (Mayol-Garcia, 2022). Family meals together increase positive youth outcomes and lead to improved family functioning. As Service Members from a Latino/Hispanic heritage, building lasting memories with our families becomes foundational. These are the times to share our values, discuss what gives meaning and purpose in life, and express the importance of sacrificial living as the basics of military life.

En Familia, ANSO celebrates, honors, and appreciates military families!

October 2022 Message

En Familia

The last few months have been a continuous celebration of the Sea Services’ birthdays. Starting with the Coast Guard’s 232nd birthday celebration on 4 August, to the 247th birthday of the U.S. Navy on 13 October, and now the celebration of the 247th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps on 10 November. We take time to celebrate these special occasions because these pauses to wear our best uniforms, participate in formal galas, partake in cake cuttings, enjoy the suck of a great run, or build camaraderie with our peers is what shape our traditions by providing meaning and purpose to our cause.

While sharing common values in the intersection of our missions, each branch intentionally reaffirms a sense of direction, pride, and belonging during these birthday celebrations. Still, it is in each member to embrace the invitation and, more so, in each one of us to inspire our peers to connect with the reason that brought us to service. Even if the reasons that brought someone into the service were egocentric, most Service Members during their time in uniform have had a moment in which sacrifice makes sense. Whether this is because of family, peers, honor, respect, or just confidence, the reason to serve that gives meaning to all we do comes alive and leads to transcendence.

As recipients of the appreciation and gratitude of our nation on Veterans Day, this is a perfect time to connect with the reason to serve for whatever term we wore or are still wearing the uniform. The smile on the face, the gut feeling deep inside, the tear or almost emotional outburst that connects with memories, are part of the range of reactions during ceremonies, special meals, or a “thank you for your service” echoes in our ears. Today on Veterans Day, the combat spirit is revived, sacrifices re-framed, allowing our unique narratives to place us back to the first day we stood ready to serve.

We celebrate what Veterans and military families have done to support and defend our constitution, flag, and citizens. Today, as we hear someone expressing their appreciation or the sound of our Star-Spangled Banner, may we connect with the legacy of military service of those who have served, are currently serving, or are preparing to join our fight with honor. We join our ANSO members, partners, and leaders to wish you a Happy Veterans Day and thank you for your dedicated service to our nation!
